WOR RADIO NETWORK PURPOSE/REASON: The SEDAT technology is based on the original DATS technology that was instituted in 1981. This technology is over 20 years old. It is no longer supported by it's manufacturer, Scientific Atlanta, receivers are scarce, and parts for the encode (uplink) end are no longer available. As a result, SEDAT went away at the end of May 2001.This is the decision made not only by ABC, who provides the uplink for The WOR Radio Network, but also by all the major networks. Those networks that do not want to convert went off the air. I HAVE A RECEIVER FROM ANOTHER NETWORK. WHAT DO I DO TO GET WOR? If the receiver is owned by the radio station and not the network, simply supply the WOR Radio Network with the serial number from the back of the receiver. The Starguide receivers play a game of "are you my mother?" with the satellite transponders. If it doesn't see its serial number, it won't allow the audio to unmute. This is why we need the number to have input into the system. The other issue to consider is how you will switch channels on the receiver. This can be cumbersome manually, and there are no provisions to do it with automation. Please see the item titled "How Do I Control the Receiver with My Automation?" I HAVE A RECEIVER FROM WESTWOOD. WHAT DO I DO TO GET WOR? Most of the major Talk Networks will require a Starguide III receiver. The WOR Radio Network is distributed by ABC Satellite Services, as are many of the major Talk programs. ABC has selected a wider carrier (for a better signal with less noise) than Westwood. A Westwood Starguide II receiver will NOT receive the ABC signal. You must purchase a Starguide III receiver. HOW DO I CONTROL THE RECEIVER WITH MY AUTOMATION? There are no provisions to control the receiver remotely as it comes from the factory. There is, however, a third party interface available from Broadcast Tools called the DSC-20, which will allow you to control the receiver and switch audio channels and carriers with an automation system or by pushbuttons wired to your console. The DSC-20 is available from the usual broadcast equipment suppliers (Broadcaster's General Store, BSW, Harris) and is list priced at $299. DO I NEED TO PURCHASE AN AUDIO/RELAY CARD FOR MY RECEIVER? This is entirely up to you. The audio card presently in your receiver can be set to the WOR Radio Network. You will have to properly map the relays for automation control in your automation system to make sure you are receiving the correct cues. HOW MUCH ARE THE CARDS? While we don't have a concrete price, they are around $450. I ONLY TAKE SHOWS FROM WOR. HOW MUCH WILL I HAVE TO SPEND TO KEEP TAKING YOUR SHOWS? The receiver costs around $2600. HOW MANY CARDS WILL MY RECEIVER HOLD? The Starguide receiver holds 6 cards total, and can be a combination of audio and supplemental relay cards. HOW WILL I KNOW WHERE TO PICK UP WOR? WHERE WILL I TUNE TO? Under the "Providers" menu on the Starguide, you will find ABCRADIONEWYORK listed. Once you select ABCRADIONEWYORK, you will go to the menu for the audio card you will be using for the WOR Network, and select WOR1/WOR2 from the "Services" menu. The main WOR Network (WOR1) audio will be available on the left channel output of the audio card. WOR2 will be available on the right channel output of the audio card. WILL THIS NEW SYSTEM WORK WITH ALL AUTOMATION SYSTEMS? It should. A relay closure output to fire a spot is a relay closure to fire a spot. The only difference comes in where you need to change satellite channels. You would need to interface the receiver to the automation with one of the Broadcast Tools boxes mentioned above. WHAT TONE SYSTEM WILL YOU USE? We will be using relays that are part of the Starguide system. WHAT SATELLITE WILL YOU BE ON? Satcom C-5 was replaced in March with GE-8. You will not notice any difference, with the possible exception of slightly better signal quality, as GE-8 is supposed to have a more powerful transmitter on board. SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT THE NETWORKS I USE WILL BE ABLE TO TURN OFF MY RECEIVER. IF THAT'S TRUE, WILL I LOSE ALL PROGRAMS IF A NETWORK DOES TURN ME OFF? The networks have the ability to unlock your receiver to receive particular programs off that network. For example, if you only take Rush from Premier, you will only be able to get audio from that audio card when Rush is on. When the program is over, this card will go silent. If, however, you use this card also on the WOR Network, it will unmute once you are looking at the ABC carrier and the WOR Channel, as the receiver will play "are you my mother?" recognize it's code, and unmute the audio.
